I'm leaving lj for good.

Actually I already did.

I was planning on getting a whole fortnight of posts rolling at my new blog before announcing it on here, but last night I hit a watershed moment: I'm almost a week ahead on material and I keep generating more.

So here's the new URL:

http://areyouthatguy.wordpress.com/

and come visit me once a week or so... I'll be writing more often than that if you want a regular fix, and as you can tell there's already been a whole bunch since the first. (Today is more than a little atypical, I was feeling VERY loquacious last night.)

The archive will stay here... and at some point I might figure out a way to feed that guy through here, but for now I just invite you to add me to your RSS feeds or whatever.

-Best,
Noah

I'm going to start off by just saying I love this flick. Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman have crafted a movie that's every bit as funny as what the Apatow camp has been pumping out all year while being 1000 times more emotionally honest. On top of that, I can't be 100% certain it isn't just the skill of the actors, but the characters manage to have fairly distinct voices, without too much of what can be called the "Aaron Sorkin problem" (or KevinSmithobia wherein all the characters sound like they are the same person because the writer can only generate their own voice).

This is easier to hide in a film where the protagonist is in damn near every scene, but unlocks the achievement nonetheless. 25 points and guaranteed work post strike to Ms. Cody.

However the script does manage to do something that drives me up the wall, something that SUPERBAD did as well. At more than one point in the flick the script has teenage characters make casual pop culture references that are tailor made for near 30-year olds. And I'm not talking about music references, but cartoons and other such ephemera. Not that I don't have first hand knowledge of this occurring in real life... I did have a completely age inappropriate relationship that was founded on a detailed knowledge of Jem and the Holograms once.

Okay, don't read too much into that.

Maybe I just don't know enough about the modern day syndication cycle. or the depths to which Saturday morning programming has fallen to... but I know if I ever hear Ellen Page turn to Jonah Hill and start expounding upon the kink subtext of the Bionic Six I'm loading up a gun show worth of ammunition into a Ryder truck and unleashing hell upon the Southland.

Blogged with Flock

Took the car in to the shop today at 9A. Which meant I was leaving the house around 8:30. I know I know, boo hoo to you Mr. Nelson. Thing is that I've been a nite owl of late, and a relatively productive one at that.

Yesterday I did the bulk of my work from 9P to 2A... and then couldn't get down till around 4:30A. Got up at 7:30A. Three hours sleep and I'm at Oceanworks in West Berkeley with an hour or so to kill... so I walked from down around Ashby and San Pablo, up to Downtown B in the hopes of scoring the week's stash of comic books. No such luck. Comic Relief doesn't open until 11, even on Holy Wednesdays.

Drop the last disk of The Wire's 4th season off at Reel at Shatt and Derby, get the call that the car is ready and march on back. In perpetual motion for an hour and a half, then back in the car to finally get the comics and return home.

And I'm zonkered.

Its after 7 when I'm writing this. I took a four hour nap today... will I ever get back to something resembling a "normal" human schedule?

Do I want to?

Blogged with Flock

Sometimes I get creeped out by what feels like my reading of the zeitgeist. Of course, out here on the Internet something is happening all the time... but right now I've been doing the groundwork on starting a blog dedicated to Futurism, and I've discovered two sites on the subject that have big pushes in January.

One is just a author's site, getting ready for a Jan book release Evolution Shift is that one. The other is more interesting, called Big Think, this one feature videos of "unfiltered interviews with today’s leading thinkers, movers and shakers".

Maybe these will bear fruit, have some kind of cultural impact, maybe they won't. My biggest problem with my relationship to the zeitgeist is that I always seem to be just a couple of months ahead of what the mainstream is aware of, but YEARS behind where the creatives are... or at least not enough to make a difference.

And I've just decided that I need to do my research in Flock for the clipboard... its that simple.

Blogged with Flock

Dolores Park: 4th of July Incident

On the 4th of July the 6 year old drummer in a local punk band had her hand blown apart by a firecracker THROWN AT HER in Dolores Park. The person responsible has not been caught, but there is a description.

Spread the word on this, lets bring this guy to justice.

**************************************

Please repost this information until your fingers go numb. DO NOT ALTER THE ORIGINAL TEXT.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the office of Jeremy Danger.

A lot of people have sent me messages regarding Roisin Isner and and the incident in Delores park on the fourth. Here is the skinny:

About 9:45 we were watching the fireworks on the north side center of the park buy the restroom. Behind us on the south side of the path directly above the restroom by the green container dead in the center of the park. There was a group of people maybe twenty or so people most looked like San Jose kids. They were lighting off fireworks all illegal lots of rockets and lots of m60’s.

From where I was standing I could not see the city fireworks well. So I turned around to watch the fireworks this group was shooting off. I saw the guy who threw the bomb that blew apart the hand of Roisin Isner.

Here is his description:
18 to 25, 5’10 – 6’, 180 lbs, olive skin (don’t know race and he had no accent), he had a smooth face like he was younger with a “chocolate milk mustache” IE: like a kid the doesn’t have to shave yet very light and thin mustache. Dark colored shirt, blue jeans, curly black hair sticking out from under an Oakland A’s cap.

Here is the important part! The hat is very distinct. It is an alternate A’s hat so it is black with a green A’S symbol. What makes this hat even more distinct is it also had a welt that was green too. A welt is a tube of fabric sewn into the seams.
I can’t find a photo of this exact hat, but I did find a photo of one like it. Imagine it with green lines on all the triangle seems of the hat.

The hat below is just an example of welting look at the red lines on this hat and imagine them in green on the hat above.

Here is what you must do! Look at all of the photos that you took that day. See if you can see someone with that description look into the background of your photos and or video.

If you have any info about this case you need to call:
Sergeant Fabbri @ 416 850 6615 he is the detective working on this case.
And / or email Chris Isner chrisisner@hotmail.com

And the last thing you must do is repost this! Even if you don’t live in the city you will have a friend of a friend that does. Hit reply to poster and then copy.

Please do not remove or change any of this information.

I should NEVER underestimate Eris.

Okay... now I gotta go "chew out" a potential collaborator who has failed me. Don't worry I'll be gentle and politic. Mostly I'm just disappointed.

iMac down. Data loss. Maintence people keep doing stupid shit that throw my plans all out of whack (today the water is off right when I'm about to take my shower and then cook the pasta I didn't make on Monday because of the iMac.) Folks have been bailing on me or being non-responsive on mission critical material.

I look forward to this storm passing and thank you in advance for bringing an end to the hurting.

Back on the laptop hack system thanks to a catastrophic systems crash. I won't be chuckiling at a "I'm a Mac" ad anytime soon I tell you. When they go the GO.

Thankfully I was still in shakedown mode and hadn't started really getting into any projects.

Two things come to mind rapidly:

1) I need me some Disk Warrior. So there's 100 bones out of my dwindling reserves right off the bat. (Okay, out of the credit line, but that's not good either.)

2) I'm going to need to put together a RAID array when I do start doing major video projects. Or rish the wrath of Mr. Beep's older brother Crash McPhuckuson.

Ultimately just surprised at how calm I am about all this.

I installed the 21 trial of Path Finder last night after seeing it in action at a friend's house yesturday. While I was totally impressed with the interface and some of the features (Drop Stack, I'm lookin at you) I realized in a short span that between my OS' quirk of not closing the Finder when I've got PF running and the sheer overwhelming number of features... well that its just too much for me right now.

I've got Quicksilver. I'm in the process of learning Final Cut Express, Scrivener, and Quicken. I just installed Witch (absolutely essential, I don't know how I lived without it), and I only figured out Spotlight when I installed Path Finder.

So sayonara Path Finder... at least until Leopard is out and I learn all its tricks.

The format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD continues. I'm not sure who has the lead... anecdotaly it seems Blu-Ray has the advantage at present, with Sony's so called "Trojan Horse" gambit of the PS3 being a Blu-Ray machine having some benefit for their movie format.

But I see here that Heroes Season 1 is an HD-DVD exclusive.

Will TV show exclusives decide the format war?

Gods know I wouldn't get a machien that couldn't play Heroes.
